2. Coche de Felipe II

Coach of Felipe II
Travel vehicle, Spain.
It was used on the journey from Madrid to Lisbon in 1619. It was driven by two postilions on horseback. It is the oldest coach in the museum's collection.

3. Coche de D. Maria II Ana de Áustria

Coach of Maria Ana of Austria
Ceremonial vehicle, Netherlands.
Emperor Joseph I of Austria had it built in 1708 for the marriage of his sister, Maria Ana, to King João V of Portugal.
It is a magnificent work of gilded, carved wood in high and low relief, featuring crowned lion – symbol of royal power and also the monogram of the queen. It arrived in Lisbon by sea in a fleet of 11 ships

4. Coche da Coroa

Coach of the crown
Ceremonial vehicle, France.
It was part of the embassy mission led by the Count of Ribeira Grande, whom King João V sent to the court of Louis XIV, King of France, in 1715.
The hood is topped by a royal crown, flanked by smaller crowns held by winged dragons, symbols of the Bragança dynasty

5. Coche dos Patriarcas

Coach of the Patriarchs
Ceremonial vehicle, France.
It belonged to the Portuguese Royal House, who gave it to the Patriarchate of Lisbon in the late 18th century.
The door panels feature the painted coat of arms of the Cardinal Patriarch D. Manuel Bento Rodrigues.

6. Coche de D. Maria Francisca de Sabóia

Coach of Maria Francisca of Savoy
Ceremonial vehicle, France
King Louis XIV of France gave it to his cousin Maria Francisca of Savoy. The door panels feature the Portuguese royal coat of arms. The painting on the rear panel depicts Royalty sat on her throne.

It is a rare example of the carros es modernes that appeared in Paris during that era.
It was brought to Portugal in 1666 for the wedding of the queen to Afonso VI. Maria Francisca of Savoy-Nemours, Mademoiselle d’Aumale, was cousin of Louis XIV, King of France

It is decorated with gilded carved wood in the French style of Louis XIV.

Coach of king João V
Ceremonial vehicle, Portugal.
It was commissioned by King João V.
In the early 20th century this coach was also used by foreign heads of state when visiting Portugal.
The rear wheels display the twelve signs of the Zodiac.
