The Bourgeois Portrait
Although the modem artist defines his freedom in opposition to the conventions of the bourgeoisie, the fact remains that the bourgeois portrait is one of his main source of income. The most eloquent expressions range from pompous busts in which he is expected to represent realistically all the lace and jewels, to domestic portraits -sometimes those of his own family- which reflect the security of a life that is rich in every sense. The need for a status recognition on the part of the bourgeoisie will increase all kind of commissions, which will have its most powerful expression in the Individual portrait.

Collectors and Enthusiasts
Collectors and enthusiasts were more and more frequent stakeholders in the world of art, and as such they became objects of representation. Both the noble classes and a new enlightened bourgeoisie are immortalised by artists in the seclusion of their chambers, looking over their collections, which often consisted of engravings. The increase in new techniques for reproducing the original work, which were more affordable than paintings or sculptures, meant the modem artists work could reach social sectors other than just the haute bourgeoisie.

The Artist in his/her Studio
The studio is identified with the ‘character’ of the modern artist as much as with the ‘style’ of his work. It is a place of retreat, of inspiration, and also the nucleus from which that inspiration spreads outwards. Modern depictions of the studio, whether in painting or photography, include both the artist and the careless model and, very often, a painting of which all we see is the stretcher, as a symbol of the mystery of the work for ever in progress, a prerogative of the artist.
