Leading art dealers gave Gulbenkian special prices and generous terms, in hopes of bigger deals to come. In 1920 the Paris dealer Georges Wildenstein reluctantly agreed to sell Gulbenkian this portrait, a work he treasured. I was persuaded than I wouldnt regret the sacrifice, that we would transact some bigger business later on down the line. Like several other dealers, including the great Joseph Duveen, Wildenstein would end up disappointed.

Gulbenkian admired the royal park of Versailles near Paris. In 1919, when writing his will, he set a large sum aside for its maintenance. I desire than the former garden beauties of Versailles shall be revived and maintained and that beautiful and singing birds shall be attracted to choose the Park abounding in flowers and frequented by birds some memorial (other than a statue) shall be placed expressing my wishes and stating my bequest. Happily, Gulbenkian lived long enough to create his own garden, Les Enclos near Deauville. It included a chicken garden city for his collection of rare birds.

45. Houdon, Jean-Antoine. Diana, 1780

Houdon, Jean-Antoine . Diana
Houdon, Jean-Antoine : 1741 1828
France
Marble
Inv. 1990
Acquired from the sculptor by Russian Empress Catherine, Diana was displayed in the palace at Tsarkoye Selo until the early nineteenth century, when it was moved to the Hermitage in St Petersburg. There it stood near the entrance, as a kind of greeting card and invitation', in the words of a curator. In June 1930 Gulbenkian purchased the statue from the Soviets. As always he was extremely solicitous of the health of one of his children, and instructed his agent to inform him of Diana's health the moment her ship docked in London. The lady had arrived a little tired, the telegram reported, code for minor damage which was quickly repaired.
